Description: Democrat Francis T. Nicholls's first election to the office of governor in 1876 was disputed by the Republican Stephen B. Packard. Nicholls was eventually named the victor as part of the Compromise of 1877, which also settled the contested presidential election and effectively ended Reconstruction. Nicholls later served a second term beginning in 1888.
