About the Image
Using architect Henry Howard's design, Micaela Almonester de Pontalba oversaw construction of the Pontalba Buildings, which stand on opposite sides of New Orleans's Jackson Square. Built between 1849 and 1851, the long red brick buildings are referred to as the Upper and Lower Pontalba Buildings. Frances Benjamin Johnston took this photograph for the Historic American Buildings Survey.
