About the Image
Jean Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the founder of New Orleans, charged cartographer Adrien de Pauger with creating this 1721 map, depicting the French Quarter, then named the Vieux Carré. De Pauger is also responsible for naming many of the city's archetypical streets, such as Royal, Iberville, Chartres, Bourbon, Orleans, and Saint-Louis.
