Fluorescent Room

Sonnier, Keith - Installation - “Fluorescent Room”

“Flourescent Room,” by Keith Sonnier, has been shown in the Netherlands, Austria, New York City, and South Korea between 1970 and 2010. For the piece, the artist creates foam rubber blocks covered in orange and green fluorescent powder. The blocks are arranged into a maze for visitors to navigate in a room illuminated entirely by black light, creating an illusion of walking in lunar space. Tisket-a-Tasket, 1994, neon and found objects, 42 x 26 x 18 inches. This mixed-media piece is from Keith Sonnier's Tidewater Series which the artist describes as particularly important to him. The works were his first to include found objects, many salvaged from a shed found during a trip home to care for his ailing father. Learn more »

This untitled piece, created in 1969, was one of the first artist Keith Sonnier created for his “Ba-O-Ba” series. The works in the series consist primarily of glass geometric shapes suffused with neon lighting from straight colored tubes. He continued the series through 1977.
